Did you know that the average traditional funeral in the U.S. (embalming, viewing, ceremony, transportation to the cemetery) costs around $7,300, not including up to $2,000 in cemetery fees? In other words, this could be one of the largest single financial transactions that a family member will make in his or her lifetime. Unfortunately, as Joshua Slocum of the advocacy group Funeral Consumers Alliance told me, “Most people sleepwalk into a funeral.”
