The methods that artisans have used to carve names and dates on headstones has changed slowly over the past two centuries, but accelarated dramatically in the last two decades. From hand engraving to pneumatic-powered chisels and, since the 1980s, laser-cut photorealistic portraits of the deceased, the gravestone has been the beneficiary of a number of industrial advances. The story behind gravestone technology is a microcosm of industrial history.
