I wish I could say I don’t agree with the authors, that I haven’t seen or heard the manipulative sales techniques that Slocum and Carlson describe from my own managers.
It is the sales-driven focus of funeral providers – profits being the only interest to corporations that own them – that gives the industry such a tarnished reputation. The real ugliness behind the scenes is not what takes place in the mortuary room, it’s how people – for the most part, caring and compassionate people – are pressured to take advantage of consumers’ grief, fear and confusion in order to retain their jobs.
