I’m sure there are funeral homes out there with shady business tactics. However, one mustn’t confuse ALL Funeral Homes who recommend an I.D. view with having shady tactics. I work for an SCI location in California that encourages I.D. view., We set up an I.D. view before the cremation for identification purposes and to help immediate family members who need closure and give them a chance to say goodbye before the cremation . The family can choose whatever Casket they like, or no casket at all except an minimum alternative container(Heavy Cardboard) as required by the crematory. We encourage visual I.D. view as opposed to photo or distinguishing marks because we feel it is better for the families we serve to have peace of mind knowing the cremated remains of their loved one are in fact the ones they will be recieiving. We do not charge an extra fee for this. Also, refrigeration fees are included in all of our cremation plans with no extra refrigeration charges tacked on per diem. I’m not certain this is the case for all SCI owned funeral homes outside of California. I agree that consumers need to beware of unscrupulous funeral homes. We are transparent, treat our families with dignity, and encourage comparing our services and pricing with other funeral homes.
