My parents have been told that according

My parents have been told that according to NC law, their remains have to stay at the motuary for 24 hours after tod. Both of them are under doctors care–both requested in pre-need arrangements, direct cremation, no services. Why the 24 hour hold? Is this a law, or is the funeral home trying to take in a little more money for services that have not been requested or needed?
