I also believe the “Basic Services of Funeral Director & Staff” (the so-called “non-declinable charges”) currently written by many funeral homes, is excessive in charges, considering not more of what the funeral homes does for these excessive charges. Many funeral homes claim that they have to charge this non-declinable charge to make money for paying the utilities, etc. What about the double mark-up for vaults – when all they do is pick up the phone and call the local Vault Company. What do they do with the mark-up on all the caskets they sell? Also, do many funeral homes mark-up the “opening and closing” charges? Usually opening and closing is done by a local vault company. We need to find out what the vault company charges the funeral home for the “opening and closing” and what mark-up the funeral home makes, simply by making a phone call.
